Doulas for Labor and Delivery
Sutter Women's Services
When requested by the expectant mother, Sutter Davis Hospital offers a special program to provide continuous physical, emotional and informational support to mothers during the childbirth process. In ancient Greece, a special slave was designated as a doula, the one who helped the lady of the house through childbearing. The doulas at Sutter Davis Hospital Birthing Center are trained in the physiological and emotional aspects of childbirth. They nurture the woman through one of the life's most precious events, helping to make it positive and memorable. Beyond seeing to the woman's comfort, the doula facilitates communication between the woman, her partner, and medical staff. The doula can explain what is happening during the birthing process and provide information to allow the woman to make informed decisions about her experience.Sutter Davis Birthing Center provides 24 hour doula coverage through a volunteer doula program. Check with your health care provider if you are interested in this free service. When you come to the Birthing Center in labor, or at the point in labor when you would like some support, the labor staff will call a doula for you.
