Diamondback 360° Procedure
Sutter Heart & Vascular Institute

Why is the doctor performing this procedure?
To remove hardened calcium blockages in the arteries in the legs, this procedure is used on patients who suffer from Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), which refers to poor circulation in the legs and is a form of Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) (link to PVD condition). PAD causes blockages in leg arteries, which result in painful symptoms including: leg pain, sores on your foot or leg that don’t heal (ulcers), leg discoloration, and sometimes amputation.

    What is the procedure?
The Diamondback 360 ° ™ is an Orbital Atherectomy System (OAS) for removing plaque blockages in the legs and restoring blood flow. It differs from any other technologies for its ability to remove calcified plaque in addition to other common kinds of plaque. It does this by using a tiny, diamond-coated crown which rapidly spins or orbits at high speeds to sand away plaque, while preserving the healthy tissue of the arterial wall. This is a minimally invasive procedure that is done through a small catheter inserted in an artery in the leg.

    Where is the procedure performed?
In the Cardiovascular Catheterization Lab, under local anesthesia

How long does this procedure take?
    The Diamond takes 1-2 hours.

    Which facilities perform this procedure?
